What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ for short, is a modern martial art focused primarily on ground fighting.
In BJJ, no strikes or kicks are allowed. To defeat an opponent, it uses control from dominant positions and then forces a submission by applying choke techniques or joint locks.
BJJ teaches how to defend effectively even against a stronger opponent using technique, control, and composure.
BJJ is often nicknamed human chess. Just like in a game on the chessboard, the key here is strategy, anticipating the opponent, and deliberate movement. The goal is the ability to find a solution in a demanding situation – intelligently, technically, and calmly.
Including BJJ training in children’s lives can lead to their comprehensive development, especially in terms of psychomotor and affective aspects.

Main aspects developed in children
Strength, fitness and agility
During BJJ training, a child’s entire musculoskeletal system is activated through movement with natural load.
Basic gymnastics exercises are primarily used to develop physical strength, endurance and flexibility.
Self-confidence and self-control
During mutual testing of strength, emotions are actively addressed and worked with. Victory helps build self-confidence, while defeat is a great opportunity to learn.
Consideration and respect
With a shared goal in mind, children are guided towards teamwork, and strong new friendships that form during training are always welcome.
Discipline
Good results in BJJ can only be achieved through diligence, determination and strong commitment. Thanks to rapid progress that becomes visible after just a few lessons, children naturally build inner motivation and a growing desire to keep improving.
Self-defence
BJJ techniques are applicable in real self-defence situations. Children are taught how to handle crisis situations safely and calmly.
Course of a BJJ Class
Line-up
First, everyone lines up, greets each other, and the plan for the training session is explained.
Warm-up, stretching and strength training
At the beginning of every session, everyone warms up together, usually by light running and wrestling-style games. This is followed by dynamic stretching and light strength training using basic gymnastics elements.
The training also includes coordination exercises focused on practical use in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Technique and sparring
After the warm-up, the session continues with practicing specific Brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques. Training starts from the very basics, and both the pace and complexity of the techniques are adapted to the children’s abilities. Towards the end of the training, a controlled sparring round is sometimes included, where the learned techniques are applied in a safe way.
Ending
Everyone lines up again, the lesson is briefly recapped, and participants shake hands.

Trainers for children's classes

Jakub Machula
I am the head children’s coach at Jungle BJJ Olomouc. I have been involved in sports since childhood, starting with gymnastics, then spending seven years ski jumping, and at the age of 15 I discovered the magic of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which I have now been training for more than 12 years. In December 2024, I was awarded my brown belt. In Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, where I come from, I actively led children’s BJJ classes for three years. I am a graduate of the Faculty of Education at Palacký University in Olomouc. In addition, I gained experience working with children as an instructor at summer camps.

David Mibelli
I started with combat sports in 2015, first trying MMA, where I also had several fights. Since 2019 I have been primarily focused on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling. In Prague, under the guidance of some of the most experienced coaches in the Czech Republic, I gained valuable experience at Jungle BJJ and Choketopus Gym. I am still an active competitor and currently have more than 100 matches under my belt from various tournaments across Europe. In Prague, I also spent 2 years working as an instructor for after-school clubs focused on combat sports. I completed the GOATA course, which focuses on natural and healthy movement patterns, helping to prevent injuries and improve movement efficiency.

Mgr. Jaroslav Kohoutek
I graduated from the Faculty of Physical Culture in both the bachelor’s and master’s programs at Palacký University in Olomouc and I am currently completing my Ph.D., primarily focused on leisure time, lifestyle, and children’s health.
In my youth I went through quite a number of sports and, via swimming, athletics, and football, I discovered Thai boxing at the age of 15. I actively trained Thai boxing for 7 years and over the last 5 years I have become deeply involved in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
I gained experience working with children already during my studies, later as a skiing and snowboarding instructor, and within my main professional activity as a fitness coach specializing in strength and conditioning training and coaching combat sports.
